Former State Geologist Donald C. Haney Honored by Alma Mater
Lexington, Ky. (April 6, 2006) -- Former State Geologist and Director of the Kentucky Geological Survey Donald C. Haney of Richmond was honored during the recent meeting in Knoxville of the Southeastern Section of the Geological Society of America. Haney, who earned his doctoral degree in geology from the University of Tennessee , received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the university's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. He is the third person to receive the award, which was first given in 2000 to recognize outstanding contributions by the department's alumni to the geoscience community.
Department Head Claudia Mora hosted the March 23 award ceremony, and UT distinguished scientist and geology professor Robert Hatcher, who has worked with Haney for many years, introduced the Pulaski County, Ky. native.
Haney served as state geologist for 21 years before retiring in 1999. He was previously chairman of the Geology Department (now Department of Earth Sciences) at Eastern Kentucky University for 14 years.
In addition to the award ceremony, a series of ten talks on geologic mapping entitled “Symposium in Honor of Donald C. Haney” was held during the Southeastern Section meeting. Organized by KGS, the symposium included talks by the Survey's own researchers and some of Haney's former students.
“This symposium celebrated the emphasis Don Haney placed on mapping while he was state geologist as well as the unexcelled accomplishments in the mapping program of the Kentucky Geological Survey,” said Jim Cobb, who succeeded Haney in the KGS post.
“Geologic maps are the primary sources of geologic information for nearly all decision-making related to our habitation of the earth's surface and our use of its resources,” Haney said in promoting geologic mapping at the symposium. “But large areas of the United States remain unmapped or mapped at scales too small to be of general use.”
In 2005, Haney was presented the John T. Galey Memorial Award by the Eastern Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. The Galey Award is the highest given by the Eastern Section and recognizes geologists whose accomplishments have been a great benefit to society
Haney serves as state geologist emeritus for the Kentucky Geological Survey.
