    • Project Description

      The Biological Pharmaceutical Complex project is a new 286,000 sf academic/research building for the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. The five-story building will house two floors of academic spaces and three floors of research laboratories. There is also a full basement with additional research facilities and a mechanical penthouse. The academic levels will include two 230 seat lecture halls, a teaching lab suite and a variety of classrooms and offices. The building will feature a five story high glazed atrium with a “cascading” stairway. The basement and first floor levels will be cast-in-place concrete structure. All above grade levels will be steel frame structure. The exterior skin is consists of brick and limestone veneer, metal panels, aluminum windows and aluminum curtain wall. Construction start is scheduled for May 2007 with completion in December 2009.

      Bid Package 01 – Site Preparation, Excavation and Site Utilities

      Work includes site preparation, excavation and major utility relocation. Significant work categories include building survey and control; site clearing, rough grading, site preparation and erosion control; relocation of overhead communication lines; relocation of overhead power lines; demolition and removal of existing chilled water and high pressure steam lines; installation of temporary chilled water lines and valves; shoring, pinning or other stabilization; mass earth and rock excavation and dewatering. This package also includes a new communications ductbank at Washington Ave.

      Value Range - $3M to 4M

      Bid Package 02 – Structural Concrete (excludes site and metal deck concrete)

      Construction of building foundations, basement, structural concrete first floor slab and walk-thru utility tunnel. Significant work categories include trench rock excavation for footings; concrete footings; basement walls and partial slab on grade (omit slab at vivarium and NMR); foundation and under slab drainage systems; rough-ins for under slab utilities; concrete footings, walls and concrete cap at utility tunnel; concrete columns, structure and first floor elevated CIP slab; waterproofing, drainage board, insulation and filter fabric; backfill and compaction; electric power, emergency power and telecommunications ductbank construction from building / tunnel wall to manhole; installation of new chilled water and high pressure steam lines at new tunnel.

      Value Range - $6M to 7M

      Bid Package 03 – Structural Steel and Upper Level Concrete

      Structural steel package for building frame above the first floor level. Significant work categories include primary structural steel; metal floor and roof decking; custom steel structure at atrium; elevated pedway steel; metal pan stairs at egress stair towers; sleeves and/or curb angles for upper level floor penetrations; concrete on metal deck at upper level slabs and concrete on steel pan stairs.

      Bid Package 04 – General Works (excludes central utility plant)

      Major general trades package for building envelope, interior fit-up and finish site work. Significant work categories include site concrete, concrete pavers, and site accessories; landscaping; CMU, brick and stone masonry; miscellaneous metals including monumental stair structures; decorative railings; SBS modified bitumen roofing; metal panel system and metal canopies; glass and glazing including skylights, glass canopies, interior glass and mirrors, possible PV glass at skylight; concrete at vivarium; fire proofing and intumescent coatings; sealants and non-MEP fire caulking / fire stopping; architectural woodwork; HM and SS frames and doors; door hardware; walls and ceilings; flooring; fire extinguishers; toilet partitions and accessories; marker boards, tack boards, etc.; fixed room seating, tables and projection screens; coolers for cold rooms; traction elevators; laboratory casework; vivarium equipment; plumbing; fire protection; HVAC and controls; electrical; fire alarm; and signage (interior and exterior).

      Bid Package 05 – CUP Equipment and Installations (CUP building by others)

      Installation of Central Utility Plant equipment as necessary to support the new Biological Pharmaceutical Complex. CUP building structure is by others. Significant work categories include setting of chillers and cooling tower (pre-purchased by owner); controls; insulation; flush fill and start-up; expansion of generator building; setting of emergency generator (pre-purchased by owner); fuel piping; electrical switchgear; new substation breaker; all CUP electrical including panel boards, distribution and connections to boiler, chillers and cooling towers.

      Bid Package 06 – Communications Cabling and Audio/Visual Equipment

      Scope includes telecommunications and data cabling; audiovisual equipment.
